Is this a bad hand/skin care idea?

My bf has badly cracked skin on his hands and he says hes going to submerge them in vaseline while he sleeps using latex gloves. I am skeptical. I feel like maybe this is a bad idea and I should try to stop him. Does anybody know if this would be good or bad for his skin, if it wouldn't be harmful I'd say more power to him, but I just don't think it sounds good.
