Is it legal and I can I ship insulin without comprising its effectiveness?

I'm coming from New Zealand to live in America for a couple of years - and I don't think I can afford the cost of diabetes in the states. I'm also not sure how the healthcare system works there for someone like me - someone who's not a citizen with a prior condition....
